The beautiful scenery around the Monastery of Leire explains how, throughout history, it has been a refuge for monarchs and bishops, an icon of Navarre and the scene of official celebrations. Hugging the mountainside, the monastery was built on the side of the range of the same name in a sheltered place that is also an excellent viewpoint over near and far mountain peaks and the greenish and bluish tones of the Yesa reservoir below.
